Buchan Pottery

Potteries were first established in Portobello, near Edinburgh as long ago as the mid-18th Century. One such factory, dating from 1770, was bought by the Buchan family in 1867 and was the last of a long line of famous names. Finally closing the Portobello Works in 1972, the Company moved to modern premises in Crieff, Perthshire, where it continues the unique and traditional hand painting of its product.
The Scottish Thistle decoration, coupled with the use of Scotland's other well-known blooms, Heather and Bluebell, is applied entirely by hand as is evidenced by the piece to piece variations which can be achieved in no other way. Further subtle differences in colouring are achieved by varying reactions in the paints to firing. Every piece of Scottish Thistle Pottery is initialled by the artist who executed the design. Its unique delicate shadings allow it to be used with endless accompanying colours in linens and accessories.
Thistle Pottery is incredibly tough and chip-resistant, is unusually easy to clean and is dishwasher and detergent proof. Having been fired to 1200 degrees Centigrade it is completely ovenproof but may not be used over a flame.
The Pottery can also be used in freezers and microwave ovens, but, as with all stonewares of this type very sudden temperature changes are to be avoided. The temperature retention quality of these vessels, hot or cold, is excellent.
